Sometimes I wonder…
What will make us British?
Our parents came as children to this land
Economic migrants after their land had been destroyed by colonialism
Our parents came to earn and rebuild their homeland
Not knowing what the future will bring
The next generation did not want to go back to their motherland
“This is our home, even when we get called all sorts, spat at and pushed around… this is our home!”
Sometimes I wonder…
What will make us British?
Our parents worked day and night to give us a happy life
Paid peanuts but smiled and carried on
Started their own businesses
Did the jobs no one else would do
Never complained knowing that God had a better plan
Our mums did not sit idle in their homes
Worked from home making samosas and clothes!
Sometimes I wonder…
What will make us British?
Our parents gave us the inspiration
“Work hard, save your pennies, study, build your lives”
“Never give up,” were their words
We made Britain our home by contributing to the Taxman
And yes, tea time is part of our daily life!
Sometimes I wonder…
What will make us British?
Well actually, what is in a label when our destination in God?
As He reminds us in the Qur’an;
“O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺ know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware.”
{Qur’an: Surah Al Hujarat: Verse 13}
This land we claim to be British, belongs to God
This earth we claim to be ours, belongs to God
We came to this earth simply to get to know one another
Sometimes I wonder…
How our Beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ felt?
When family members turned away
When people threw rubbish along the way
When the companions were tortured to death
And let us recall for a moment, the last sermon of the Beloved One ﷺ
He ﷺ said;
“…All mankind is from Adam and Eve; an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also, a white has no superiority over a black, nor does a black have any superiority over a white, except by piety and good action…”
Sometimes I wonder…
What will make us British?
Yours truly,
The Servant
