Ramadan reflections: The City of Fes

Alhumdulilah, this Ramadan has given me time to reflect upon the journeys travelled over the years to the most inspiring of places.

No doubt, Morocco is one of my favourites, with fourteen trips in the last ten years! Alhumdulilah, amazing journeys with soul searching men and women from far and wide.

Fes being my favourite place to visit, known as the City of Saints - when you walk through the alleyways of the Medina, you feel the light of illumination and the love of the Qur'an is overwhelming! A city where planning your day is not really something you do - rather let the Friends of Allah (Awliyah Allah) take you by their hand, where they please.

A lesson on the path of purification is letting go of what you know and going with the flow. Quite hard when you're so used to doing things in a logical and ordered manner. Well, Fes will definitely teach to relax and go with the flow!

Fatima Al Fihr RA, a leading lady of inspiration to the Muslim world - her great courage and devoution on the path has given me the strength to have a “we can do this” mindset to my own work in the community. She planted the seed of building the first University in the world, which sits majestically in the centre of the old city of Fes. What an inspiration, not only for Muslim women but for all women on a mission!

And as I write this short reflection, I can hear the sounds of Dhikr (chanting) from the Zawiyah of the Tijaniyyah. The sounds echo so brilliantly in the mosque halls - indeed a sanctuary for lovers of the Beloved One ﷺ.

There is more to Fes - the more you visit the more its hidden mysteries will open up to you. May the light of Fes be with you too!
